Develop creative abilities and analytical skills
The strength of this course comes through continuous peer discussion and evaluation. Students are expected to keep a sketchbook documenting their ideas and a reflective journal tracking their own progress and development:
Term 1 (12 weeks)
This term addresses basic skills in piercing, soldering, hollow forms, links and chains. A few weeks will be spent on each technique to promote deep and thorough learning. In addition to studio based technical projects students develop creative thinking and design skills through weekly homework assignments.
Term 2 (12 weeks)
Projects for the second term cover skills and techniques in the production and manufacture of jewellery. Techniques such as wax carving, casting, press forming, hinge making, tap & die and technical drawing skills will be covered. Students will learn how to create pieces using these techniques.
Term 3 (12 weeks)
At the start of the third term you will be expected to present a project proposal that will be independently led. Technical exercise will continue to run alongside your independent project. Students aim to create a collection of pieces that represent their ideas and technical skills to present at a public exhibition.
Students have the opportunity to exhibit their final collection at New Designers a graduate exhibition held each year at the Business Design Centre, London. Previous students have benefited greatly from participating in this exhibition. Networking with many potential customers, galleries and shop owners it tends to serve as a launch pad for the start of their jewellery career.
