These workshops will be led by internationally renowned silversmith Simone Ten Hompel and will explore various aspects of THE FORM within the context of jewellery and silversmithing. Throughout three workshops, we will look at THE FORM as a solid, weightless and elastic object in relation to the body. Students will be working within very tight parameters to create and develop new ideals and push the possibility of existing ideas.
These workshops will run in a series of 3 where students are able to choose to do all 3 workshops or complete workshops individually. A different theme will be explored during each workshop in which each theme will deal with a unique aspect of form. For each workshop, students will be asked to bring in something they have made or an object they love as a stimuli for conversation about their interests.
The workshops are aimed at makers who are in their mid-career (specialising particularly in the making of jewellery or other small scale/ hand-held objects) as well as making enthusiasts looking to inject new ideas, develop new approaches to their work and adhere their own personal elements to their creative process.
In each workshop we are not aiming for finished pieces but instead a series of experimentations, ideas, developments and new processes that the student can take away and develop further into your practice. In all three workshops, the experimentation and process is as important as any final objects that might be created as by forming models, pieces become tangible evidence of thinking through making.
German-born Simone ten Hompel has been working with metal for over forty years, originally as a locksmith she then studied jewellery and silversmithing at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf, Germany. It wasn’t until studying in London for an MA at the Royal College of Art however that it became clear that metalwork was her calling. Since then ten Hompel has carved out a distinguished career as one of Britain’s most critically acclaimed craftspeople.
As a practicing metalworker, ten Hompel has contributed to numerous group exhibitions around the world and presented her work in solo exhibitions in the UK and Internationally. She is frequently invited to speak on craft, making and the language or vocabulary of metal and has led a number of collaborative and curatorial projects.
At The Cass, Simone ten Hompel is Reader in Metal and is a studio lead teaching subject specific techniques and theory for jewellery, silversmithing and metal. She is also active as a key member of the supervisory team for MA by Project and supervises a number of PhD students supporting their individual projects and research.
Winner of the Jerwood Prize: Metal in 2005 – the most prestigious prize in British contemporary applied art, and the State of Bavaria award in 2012, IHM, Munich.
Public collections include: Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; V&A Museum, London; Aberdeen Art Gallery, Scotland; and the Crafts Council Collection, London.
This workshop deals with form as a solid object in relation to it’s volume, space and context.The creative process will begin with a short warm up exercise leading on to experimentation using paper, and then with metals. Techniques such as stretching, forming and folding will be taught to expand the possibilities of the materials.
Peer discussion and reflection regarding the process will be an integral part of the student’s creative progress while the objects brought in will be used as a point of reflection surrounding the student's interest and practice.
